Brassica rapa

Tall, white variety with purple top. Turnip has a mild and delicate cabbage flavour, somewhat reminiscent of swede. It is easy to grow and develops quickly, and should be harvested when small. Turnips are sensitive to high summer temperatures and drought.

The quality is best when grown in spring or, even better, towards late summer, when there is less risk of attack from the cabbage root fly. It's a good idea to cover the crop with insect netting to prevent attacks from, for example, cabbage root fly and diamondback moth.
